The Sun Odyssey 42DS boasts a modern, fluid design, a rare, timeless elegance, and the comfortable interior layout expected of a sailboat built for cruising, all while delivering a superior performance.

Cruising World: Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 42 DS: All Decked Out

BY Herb McCormick POSTED June 12, 2006

To be honest, I probably would’ve missed it had it not been pointed out to me. But Boat of the Year judge Bill Lee saw it straightaway. “Check that out,” he said, gesturing to the deck-stepped Selden spar on the new Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 42 DS. “They’ve got a separate groove to accommodate the luff of the storm trysail.” We looked at one another and nodded approvingly. Very clever. Very cool.

Back in 2004, Jeanneau caused quite a stir with the launch of its stylish Sun Odyssey 54 DS (deck saloon). Italian designer Vittorio Garroni had worked more with cars than boats when he came up with the fresh-looking 54 DS, and he wasn’t bound by any conventional sailboat-design sense. By rounding out the coachroof, Garroni tweaked the deck-saloon concept just enough to create a new look that has since been imitated by others. Buoyed by the success of the 54 DS, Jeanneau subsequently launched a similar 49-footer and then the 42 DS, which I test-sailed off Miami.
————————————————————————————- Review: With contemporary styling, Jeanneau’s 42 Deck Saloon is a sturdy and spacious yacht that will grab attention at every port of call

You can’t miss the signature eagle-eye windows and sculptured deck lines that announce Jeanneau’s groovy new 42DS has arrived in Australia. The styling is the work of Italian designer Vittorio Garroni. And, while DS stands for ‘Deck Saloon’, the acronym could so easily mean ‘designer series’. Even tied to the marina, the chic yacht commands attention.
Nor will you see past the voluminous hull from ocean-racing yacht designer Marc Lombard, who is responsible for penning everything from 100ft maxis to Open 60s through to mini transat yachts. It is especially beamy aft, giving volume where you want it, to a full-width owners’ aft cabin with a king-size bed, no less.
