The First 42s7, the product of experience gained through the First 45f5 and the First 53f5, is also the result of intense research in terms of quality, performance and comfort. From the structural inner moulding laminated on the hull, to the hull/deck joint, the most important words are strength and reliability. Whatever your preference, 2 or 3 cabins, Pear or Cherry finish, the warmth and efficiency of a Philippe Starck interior awaits you. There’s no doubt, your First 42s7 combines both science and performance, the enjoyment of life on board and the mastery of technology, giving you the greatest possible pleasure for sailing long distance in comfort… and fast!

The Beneteau First 42s7is a very good sailing boat. In addition to the straight cruising version that we tested, she is offered in a racing version with a larger mainsail, a more flexible mast for mainsail shape control, and additional racing gear. I understand that she has been successful on the IMS cruiser/racer circuit. She is well built, has nice cruising accommodations for two couples and is easy to handle. She also represents good value at under $200,000.
The Honcho is headed south to explore Baja, mainland Mexico and the Sea of Cortez. I thought it would be fun to write about some of the people, places and boats, especially the boats, that we encounter along the way. I hope you find these comments valuable as you plan your own getaway to paradise…Wherever that may be.

A few days ago a Beneteau 42s7 arrived on our dock in Marina La Cruz. The owner, an Aussie, bought the boat in L.A. and is sailing it home to Australia. The 42s7 is a big sister to the Honcho, so naturally I jumped at the chance to go for a sail aboard her. We left the dock around 11:00am and sailed a nine mile beat out to Punta de Mita in a breeze that started at about 6 knots and built to about 16 as we approached the point. Flying a fairly tired dacron main and 120% roller furling jib and towing a dinghy, we weren’t exactly setting any speed records, but I did get a good sense of how the boat might perform if it was set up in racing trim.

A recent addition to the First Series, the 42s7 is a handsome, production racer/cruiser design from Bruce Farr. Since it first began producing performance oriented cruisers in 1976, Beneteau has achieved tremendous success in the American market; it is now the third largest producer in America, outsold only by Catalina and Hunter. Like them, Beneteau strives for contemporary, affordable designs that are efficiently built. We recently checked out the 42s7 Owner’s Version, a recent addition to the First line, which continues Beneteau’s trend of offering boats, both in lines and accommodations, that attempt to establish a look that is distinctive in a crowd.

With Philippe Starck, it was the first time in the world of yachting that a boatyard called on a designer outside sailing circles. The resulting creation was the First S.
In 1987, the First 35S5 was an audacious boat. It was closely followed by the First32S5. These were revolutionary creations which brought sailing tradition and the most modern design concepts together.
In 1989, the First 41S5 was born, in collaboration with Jean Berret who, in a few words, talks about his work with Philippe Starck: “This unconventional thinker helped me distance myself from sailing archetypes. We built a daring boat – we still remember the surprise prompted by the vertical hull porthole! – with great elegance as much under sail as inside.”
